Howlong Community Progress Association
Featured in the Howlong Grapevine August 2021
Since the July Grapevine update, the committee has held two further meetings with a great deal of research currently being undertaken for the following issues:
Ambulance/First Responder: Committee members enjoyed an informal 1 hour meet & greet with Justin Clancy MP at the Howlong Bakery on 12 July. Justin was incredibly pleased to hear of the HCPA launch and indicated his office was willing to support our future endeavours. He was aware that HCPA had made representations to NSW Health and confirmed their representative will attend a special public meeting to explain the benefits of a First Responder service that Chiltern is successfully operating. This is planned for the 20th or 27th September with the date to be confirmed.
Police: Discussions have been held with Insp. P. Huggett, Officer in Charge, Murray River Police District, who has indicated that he and Sgt Lewis will attend the next public meeting to speak on police operations in the region and making Howlong a safer place to live. To hear their feedback firsthand is a big win for the community and we encourage everyone to attend.
HCPA Membership: The committee has resolved that an individual membership to secure voting rights at any public meeting is $5.00 per person (min age 18 years). Our progress association cannot operate without financial support, and we urge everyone to become members. The application form can be dropped at the Resource Centre, Post Office, emailed, or accepted at any public meeting. If paying by cash please secure it in an envelope, however a bank transfer may be the best option.
HCPA Website: A lot of research and cost is involved in the format, planning, and construction of a user-friendly website that will allow community and visitors to discover what’s occurring in Howlong. Businesses will be showcased as well as other community groups and current projects within the community. A secure contact tab will allow people to send confidential comments to the committee for deliberation. We are currently seeking start-up funds from businesses, private donations, and a small local government grant.
Performing Arts Sub-Committee: An approach has been made to form a sub-committee of HCPA, with a view to bringing a showcase event to Howlong in 2022. It’s early days yet so more information will be shared as it comes to light.
In closing, the matter of trees in Hawkins Street and around the town is still under investigation, as is a master plan for Memorial Park. We hope to have more information for you at the public meeting.
