Howlong Community Progress Association Inc.
Featured in the Howlong Grapevine July 2021
At the time of writing this update the committee has held two meetings. The first was to elect the office-bearers: President/Stuart Sizer; Vice President/Robyn Roland; Secretary/Cheryl Cook; Treasurer/Sue Wearne. The remaining committee members are John Skinner, Damien Ryan, Sue Gibbins & Sheryl Pitman. As a newly formed committee it was important to familiarise ourselves with each other and establish strengths each could bring to the committee. General business included ideas & surveys from the public meeting, constitution, membership, website, bank account and grant funding potential. A letter of thanks was sent to Federation Council for attending the public meeting and advised of the committee’s new structure. Justin Clancy MP has also been advised of our new Progress Association, and when required we will be making representations to him on the community’s behalf.
Our second meeting was equally productive with the results of all ideas put forth collated into five categories: - Infrastructure, Emergency Services, Environment, Amenities and Recreation.
Having identified all the ideas put forth, the next task is to separate them into short, medium & longterm projects. This requires a great deal of background research and dialogue with other stakeholders to determine the timeframe and difficulty of pursuing a particular project. However, the committee is aware of the community’s concerns about recent vandalism and instances at Memorial Park etc. We too consider this a priority and have already made enquiries that will hopefully give solution-based feedback to the community sooner rather than later.
Two other areas where expertise, time and patience will be required are: -
Developing a static website that promotes Howlong and offers easy communication access.
Applying for government grants that may be suitable for projects. Initially it will be to acquire ‘seed funding’ for start-up costs via a grant or public donations. [Robyn, Cheryl, Sue & Sheryl recently attended a Grant Writing Workshop held at the Federation Council and found the information valuable for future grant planning].
A second public meeting is planned for September where community can vote on which project/s to pursue first…..until then watch the monthly Grapevine for updates from the committee.
